Express Septic – For All Your Septic Tank Needs

Why Many People Never Think About Their Septic Tanks

You know the saying; out of sight, out of mind. In contemporary homes, the sewage system remains inconspicuously out of the way.  Unless there is a block in the toilet or the bathtub suddenly fills up with smelly brown goo, people rarely think about calling their plumbers for a check-up.  Truth be told, the waste from the house doesn’t go directly into the sewage. This is where the septic tank comes in.

The usually invisible septic tank is an underground domain made of concrete, brick or even fiberglass. It is here that sewage is collected, retained and allowed to naturally decompose using anaerobic bacteria. The treated sewage (now called effluent) is drained away into the central sewer lines for further treatment. However, that is only half the job. The solids are retained as sediments in the septic tank. Even with a strong microbial ecosystem cracking down on the solid waste, also known as septage, a septic system that is well-functioning and an efficient drain field, the scum and sludge layers in a septic tank will build up over time. This causes two problems:

  •  Preventing new waste from being properly broken down
  •  Blocking effluent flow to the main sewers

How Often Should Septic Tanks Be Checked?

To prevent the septic tank from becoming clogged, the septage should be pumped out at regular intervals. This is generally when the floating scum layer reaches a height of around 6 inches from the entrance of the outlet pipe or the sunken sludge layer is less than 12 inches from the mouth of the outlet pipe. This is to prevent the septage from mixing with the treated effluent. The other downside of not knowing what is happening in the septic tank is that without breaking your tank open (an unwise move), there is no way to sniff out the state of your hermetically sealed septic tank.

This is why Express Septic recommends a yearly checkup for septic tanks systems. By having your septic system inspected by an expert, you will get a detailed understanding on your levels of sludge and scum, the working state of the system’s pipes and bacterial mechanism as well as a thorough inspection of the drain field to ensure that it is percolating the treated effluent properly. This will also give you a rough idea of how often your septic tank should be pumped.
